In the early nineteen nineties I was studying fine art and movies. I related to the inner turmoil and self-destructive nature I sensed from Kurt Cobain. A lot of my friends shopped at thrift stores and wore the old sweaters. We were poor. These particular artworks are pen drawings because it was economical.
I love the surf music of the 60’s. Most of these artworks were actually made while listening to surf music.
This is just an interesting note of the times: Around the same time, I was also studying film. I came up with this great idea to start a movie with the song “Miserlou” by Dick Dale. True story. This was two or three years before Pulp Fiction. My movie would have stunk, but the song part is the truth. Fortunately for us all, Quentin Tarantino made his movie. Pulp Fiction is a masterpiece.
I had been continuing to study art with the belief that the change over to film would be inevitable. Art was just not going to be profitable.
Briefly as the two interests overlapped I found myself doing artwork that was pushing me to my limits. These are those artworks. There’s not a lot. But this is the best stuff I will ever create. I hope it’s good enough.
From a time-capsule in 1992, sitting in the back of the closet for over thirty years. These were stored away and forgotten about.
From the time period of that great artistic revolution, that I feel to be a small part of, I am very pleased to be able to share them with everyone today. I hope to bring a small fraction of the magic of those times and artists.
